Manipur govt signs up with SJVN for 1500 MW Tipaimukh hydel project

Manipur government has signed a MoU with SJVN, a joint-venture company of government of India and government of Himachal Pradesh. The project involves setting up of a multi purpose hydro power facility with flood management functions on the river bank of Barak river in Churachandpur district of Manipur. It will form a special purpose vehicle to execute the project and now, a detailed feasibility study report is likely to be prepared. However, there are apprehension in Bangladesh on its impact on its rivers Surma and Kushiara and a large area inundation of Manipur villages.
 

Government to revive Bhagirathi hydel project

Expert Committee has cautioned the government on stoppage of work in an active seismic zone. Following it, government has initiated actions to take a fresh look at the 600 Mw Loharinag-Pala hydel project. Various Committee has recommended to clean the stretch to clean all hydel projects betweeb Gamukh and Haridwar in Uttarakhand. NTPC which has initiated work on the Rs.22000 million project had suspended the work last year on wake of protests.
 

New technology to generate power from water

Traditionally electricity is generated from water by storing in huge dams which alters ecosystems and landscape in a large way. A technology is in the offing which will generate electricity from a turbine which are submerged underground in a river which will make use natural currents of river. Verdant Power of USA is testing this technology in New York East river. Similar projects are likely to happen around the world..
 

Menchuka Hydro Power plans 70 MW Pema Shelphu hydel project

Menchuka Hydro Power Pvt Ltd plans 70 MW Pema Shelphu hydel power generation project across Yargyap Chu River near village Menchuka in West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. The project involves setting up of 3.7 km head race tunnel, and 81 meter high concrete gravity dam across river bed.
