Hindustan Construction Co, a leader in dam construction, where over half of the dams in the country are built by HCC has submitted a proposal to develop the ambitious Kalapsar project. According, a huge dam is to be built over the Gulf of Khambat which will turn the gulf into a fresh water lake of over 2000 sq.kms. It will be fed by excess water from twelve rivers including, Narmada, Mahi, Sabarmati and Dadha. Dholera which is to be built on the lines of Lavasa City requires huge water which is to be met from Kalapsar fresh water lake, also solving the problem of the water starved arid region. It will be a 64.6 km long and 35 meter wide dam will connect Ghogha in Bhavnagar with Hansot in Bharuch District. There had been a score of feasibility studies on the project which includes topographical surveys, bathymetry, oceanographic and geophysical investigations, environmental impact assessment/social impact assessment studies, geotechnical investigation and seismic studies by 15 premium institutes. The project will roughly cost between Rs.250 billion to Rs.350 billion and may be completed by 2020. However, the lake will create trouble for upcoming ports – Dholera and Khambat creating sedimentation
