Orissa Power Consortium to set up 20 MW Samal hydro electric project in Angul district of Orissa. The project involves setting up of a barrage at Samal, about 35 km downstream of the Rengali dam, across river Brahmani. The project has decided to utilize a design discharge flow of 260 m3/sec with 9.85 m design head, which will generate around 102 million units of energy per annum in 90% dependable year with 20MW installed capacityThe powerhouse comprises five numbers of 4000 KW ‘S’ type Kaplan Horizontal turbines coupled with synchronous generators. The generation voltage at the terminals will be 11 KV, which will be stepped up to 132 KV to match the grid voltage level. The power generated will be supplied to West Bengal and a PPC had been signed with Power Trading Corp. The project had been commissioned in 2006
